Bespoke Suits Cut by Hand in Melbourne
Every bespoke suit from One Tailor begins as a blank sheet of paper and a conversation about the life you want the garment to live. Jason Nick, a third generation master tailor, cuts each pattern by hand in our Lonsdale Street workshop, drawing on techniques his grandfather first used in 1970 and pairing them with premium, climate-conscious fabrics suited to Melbourne's four seasons in one day. From consultation through final pressing, nothing is outsourced and nothing is rushed.

A Suit Built for the Way You Work and Live
A true bespoke suit is a document of your body and your routine. It remembers how you sit through long meetings, how you stand at a presentation, how fabric moves when you walk briskly down Collins Street in sudden rain. Off the rack clothing cannot hold that kind of memory. At One Tailor, the goal of every commission is a garment that looks intentional from the first stitch and improves with every wear.
Jason Nick leads our suit program. He is the third generation of his family to cut cloth professionally, trained in the traditions his grandfather established in 1970. That heritage shows in the details: a hand shaped lapel roll, a pick stitch you can only see in certain light, a shoulder line that sits quietly rather than shouting. Jason’s work lives in the boardrooms of 435 Bourke Street, the courtrooms near William Street, and the wedding parties of the Yarra Valley.
What Happens in Your First Consultation at Lonsdale Street
Your first visit is unhurried. Jason will talk through how you wear a suit: what occasions you need to cover, what frustrates you about your current wardrobe, and what you want strangers to see when you walk into a room. Liam O’Connor, our measurements and styling consultant, will take thirty plus measurements and observe how you stand and move. We then walk you through the cloth library, which carries British and Italian wools, tropical weight summer options, and heritage flannels for winter. There is no pressure to decide in one sitting. Many clients come back twice before selecting the cloth.
Melbourne Weather and Cloth Selection
Melbourne is famous for its four seasons in one day, and cloth choice is where that reality is won or lost. A client who works in Docklands and takes evening meetings in Southbank needs a cloth that breathes during a thirty degree afternoon but holds shape when a cold front rolls in off Port Phillip Bay. We recommend tropical wools and high twist cloths for the warmer months, mid weight worsteds as a corporate all rounder, and flannel or soft tweed for winter. Every decision is made with Melbourne’s climate in mind, because a suit that only works on mild days is a suit you cannot trust.
How Full Canvas Construction Changes the Fit
The interior of a One Tailor jacket is built the old way. The chest canvas is hand shaped to the contours of your body, then sewn into the jacket so it floats naturally rather than being glued or fused. This is slow work, and it is the reason a well made suit drapes cleanly across a moving body. Over time, the canvas moulds to you further, meaning your suit becomes more yours with every wear. Jason treats this stage of the process with particular care, because a jacket’s honesty lives or dies in the chest.
Spring Racing and Wedding Commissions
Melbourne’s cultural calendar is shaped by the Spring Racing Carnival and the wedding season that follows. Both place enormous demand on a heritage tailor. We set aside capacity for Spring Racing commissions each year, building statement jackets, three piece suits, and refined morning coats for clients attending Flemington and the Birdcage. For weddings, we coordinate the groom’s three piece with the groomsmen’s suits so every fabric, lining, and buttonhole reads as a considered set rather than an afterthought.
The Investment
Our suits start at $1,800 and reach $4,500 depending entirely on the cloth you select. That figure covers consultations, the paper pattern, the fabric, construction, fittings, and any first year adjustments. Unlike fast fashion that tires within a year, a One Tailor commission is built to carry you through a decade of hard wear. Read our perspective on what actually drives the price of a bespoke suit. Many of our Melbourne clients are still wearing the jackets Jason built them in their first corporate role.
