About the atelier
Three Generations of Melbourne Tailoring
One Tailor is a family trade, carried across three generations of master tailors, quietly dressing Melbourne since 1970. Our Lonsdale Street atelier serves professionals, grooms, and anyone who wants clothing built to outlast a season.
From 1970 Victoria to Lonsdale Street
Our story begins in 1970, when my grandfather first opened a small tailoring room in regional Victoria and set a stubbornly high standard for fit, hand finishing, and honest advice. I grew up inside that workroom, surrounded by the hum of machines, the snap of shears on wool, and the calm focus of people who took garments seriously.
As a third generation tailor, I founded One Tailor to bring that family craft into a modern Melbourne context. The techniques are the ones my family has used for half a century, refined for a city whose professionals move from the Paris End of Collins Street to Southbank, Docklands, and the Yarra Valley in a single week.
A Small Team, Carefully Chosen
Our workroom is deliberately small so that every client is measured, fitted, and finished by a tailor who knows their name. Jason Nick leads the house as owner and master tailor, with Sofia Karagiannis running bridal and formal alterations, and Liam O'Connor guiding styling and measurements for first-time clients.
Between us, we carry over four decades of bench experience. We dress Spring Racing attendees in the morning and alter a grandfather's vintage overcoat in the afternoon, and we treat both jobs with the same level of attention.
Built for Melbourne Weather and Melbourne Lives
Melbourne's four seasons in one day is a genuine design constraint, not a cliche. We specialise in climate-conscious fabric selection, using breathable tropical wools, linens, and silk blends for summer heatwaves, and heavier flannels and tweeds for grey winter mornings, so a suit keeps a sharp silhouette from an 8am meeting to an after-work drink.
We also believe in restoration over replacement. If a jacket can live another ten years with careful resizing, we will tell you honestly, and we will do the work. That is the difference between a house built on heritage and a shop built on turnover.
